The Juici Patty Lesson: A Story About Patience and Perspective

This morning, I walked into Juici Patty with a simple task: grab a coco bread for a friend. I expected to be in and out quickly, but the universe had other plans. The line was long—at least 15 people ahead of me. Still,

I decided to wait, watching as the three cashiers tried their best to manage the crowd. One was handling phone orders, while the other two assisted in-store customers.

As time passed, I noticed a couple at the first cashier taking quite a while. After about seven minutes of waiting behind them, my patience began to wear thin. Frustrated, I spoke up—not quietly either. I said something along the lines of: "I hate when people stand in line for so long and still don’t know what they want when it’s finally their turn." A few others nodded in agreement. I felt justified in my annoyance.

But then I got closer.

And I saw the reason for the delay.

One of the individuals in the couple was blind. The other was gently guiding and assisting her with the order.

They weren’t being difficult or indecisive—they were navigating a world that wasn’t built with them in mind. Suddenly, my frustration turned to guilt.

That moment hit me hard.

I had been so quick to judge, so ready to complain, without taking a second to consider that there might be more to the story. My impatience blinded me in a way more powerful than physical blindness ever could.

It was a humbling lesson—one I won’t forget.

In our rush to move through life, it’s easy to overlook the quiet challenges others carry. We must remember to be slow to judge, to stay mindful, and to lead with empathy—even in the smallest moments.
